How SIL Works
Step 1: Understanding Your Needs
We begin by meeting with you and your support team to understand your daily routines, goals and level of assistance required. Together, we create a personalised plan that focuses on building independence and confidence.
Step 2: Finding the Right Home
We help you explore housing options that suit your lifestyle and support needs. This could be a shared home with other participants, an individual unit or a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) property if required.
Step 3: Setting Up Your Supports
Our team organises trained support workers to assist you with daily living tasks such as cooking, cleaning, personal care and community activities. We match staff to your preferences to ensure a comfortable and consistent routine.
Step 4: Living Independently with Support
Once your supports are in place, you’ll receive regular or 24/7 assistance depending on your needs. We work alongside you to build skills, confidence and independence in your day-to-day life.
Step 5: Review and Ongoing Support
We regularly review your SIL plan with you and your support network to make sure it continues to meet your goals. Adjustments can be made at any time to support changes in your lifestyle or level of independence.
Commonly Asked Questions
SIL refers to a support service that helps participants live as independently as possible in a home environment—either shared with others or on their own—providing support like personal care, meals, and daily tasks. It is for people who have higher support needs.
- Duration & Purpose: Respite / STA is short-term; SIL is longer-term or ongoing.
- Who benefits: Respite is for temporary relief (for both the participant and their carers), whereas SIL is more focused on continuous support and building independence.
To access either, you must be an NDIS participant with allocated funding that includes STA or SIL support. Eligibility is based on having disability-related support needs, meeting certain criteria for level of support, and having goals in your plan around independence, community participation or carer relief.
You’ll usually talk with your NDIS planner or support coordinator, discuss your needs, evidence of care or support required, and ensure your goals include the types of accommodation and support you need. The provider will help you with service agreements once the funding is confirmed
Funding comes through your NDIS plan. Respite / STA is often part of the Core Supports budget or “Short Term Accommodation and Assistance” fund. SIL is funded under support for home & living / daily living tasks. Funding depends on your assessed support needs.
Generally, NDIS allows up to 28 days per year of STA/respite, with individual stays usually up to 14 days in a block. These limits can depend on your plan, current needs, and service provider availability.
Typical supports may include: personal care (showering, grooming, medication), meals, assistance with mobility, household tasks, community access or recreation, 24-hour supervision (if required), trained staff, and sometimes skill development or therapy where relevant.
Depending on the provider, there might be additional charges for special activities, transport, or consumables. Also, SIL often does not cover things like rent, board, or day-to-day non-support household expenses unless explicitly included in your plan. Always check what’s included in your Service Agreement.
